THE CIHEAM PROVIDES GRANTS FOR FIELD RESEARCH

ELIMINATE HUNGER AND REDUCE RURAL POVERTY
From 16 December 2019 to 29 February 2020, the CIHEAM is opening a call for contribution for its "Field Research Initiative" (FRI) project.
The FRI supports PhD students and young researchers to apply, broaden and disseminate the results of their research, contributing to:
- eradicate hunger and malnutrition,
- enhance the sustainability and resilience of agriculture,
- improve water use and livelihoods,
- reduce rural poverty
- support the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),
while reducing the negative effects of migratory pressures in the region.
The CIHEAM invites PhD students and young researchers to conduct short-term field research related to food and nutrition security, sustainable agriculture and rural development, climate change mitigation and plant health in order to enhance practical skills.
This Field Research Initiative (FRI) will give successful applicants the opportunity to engage with community-based local and rural organisations like producer organisations, cooperatives or small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as with specialised laboratories and centres of excellence.
The purpose of the FRI is to strengthen interactions between young scientists, rural communities and local organisations, promote knowledge exchanges, empower youth with practical skills, share good practices and innovative tools for sustainable agriculture and rural poverty reduction, and foster networks and employment opportunities for young researchers and PhD students across the Mediterranean region, also through South-South Cooperation.
A special focus will be made for the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH). 3 out of the 10 grants will be awarded to proposals providing innovative/sustainable solutions to pests/diseases of primary importance for the Mediterranean and African regions.
The first ten proposals will be broadcasted (poster/videos) during the final event of the IYPH celebrations in the key event of Helsinki 2020 for global visibility.

- éradiquer la faim et la malnutrition,
- renforcer la durabilité et la résilience de l'agriculture,
- améliorer l'utilisation de l'eau et les moyens de subsistance,
- réduire la pauvreté rurale
- soutenir la réalisation des Objectifs de Développement Durable des Nations-Unies (ODD),
tout en réduisant les effets négatifs des pressions migratoires dans la région.
Le CIHEAM invite les doctorants et les jeunes chercheurs à postuler pour entreprendre des recherches à court terme sur le terrain, liées à la sécurité alimentaire et nutritionnelle, à l'agriculture durable et au développement rural, à l'atténuation du changement climatique et à la santé des plantes afin d'améliorer leurs compétences pratiques.
L'Initiative de recherche sur le terrain (FRI) donnera aux candidats retenus la possibilité de s'engager auprès d'organisations locales et rurales communautaires comme les organisations de producteurs, les coopératives ou les petites et moyennes entreprises, ainsi qu'avec des laboratoires spécialisés et des centres d'excellence.
L'objectif du FRI est de renforcer les interactions entre les jeunes scientifiques, les communautés rurales et les organisations locales, de promouvoir le partage de connaissances, de doter des jeunes de compétences pratiques, d'échanger des bonnes pratiques et des outils innovants pour une agriculture durable et la réduction de la pauvreté rurale.
Le FRI participe également à favoriser les réseaux et les possibilités d'emploi pour les jeunes chercheurs et doctorants à travers la région méditerranéenne, également par le biais de la Coopération Sud-Sud.
Un focus sera donné sur l'Année Internationale de la Santé des Végétaux (IYPH). 3 des 10 subventions seront accordées à des propositions fournissant des solutions innovantes/durables contre des ravageurs/maladies qui affectent les régions méditerranéennes et africaines.
Les dix premières propositions seront diffusées (par exemple affiches/vidéos) lors de l'événement final d'Helsinki 2020 qui marquera la fin des célébrations de l'IYPH et jouira d'une visibilité mondiale.

THE CIHEAM
Established in 1962, the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) is a Mediterranean intergovernmental organisation composed of 13 Member States (Albania, Algeria, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey). As a key player in multilateral cooperation in the fields of agriculture, food, fisheries and rural territories, its missions revolve around four main objectives:
Protection of the planet by combating waste in all its forms including waste of knowledge and know-how;
Food and nutrition security by boosting sustainable agriculture and food;
Inclusive development by investing in new generations and fragile territories;
Prevention of crises and resilience of territories.
The CIHEAM Action Plan for the Mediterranean 2025 (CAPMED 2025) that falls within the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development of the United Nations is based on these four lines. The CIHEAM carries out its missions through the tools of specialised training, network research, cooperation, technical assistance but also political dialogue and partnerships.
