From concept to new corporate actions: Building the CAPMED Roadmap

18-19 April 2018, Bari

The first CAPMED Focal Point Meeting took place in the Institute of CIHEAM Bari and aimed at launching the CAPMED Network and its activities animated by the CIHEAM Headquarters, the CIHEAM Advisory Board, the Directors of the CIHEAM Institutes and the thematic focal points. The two-day meeting objectives were to establish a roadmap of the CAPMED (CIHEAM ACTION PLAN FOR THE MEDITERRANEAN  2025) corporate actions on the short and medium-term periods.

Rural Migration Forum "Fostering Regional Cooperation on Agriculture, Rural Development and Migration in the Mediterranean Region"  

29 May 2018, Rome

 The CIHEAM jointly organized a Forum with the FAO, the UfM, and the EUI, under the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), aimed at discussing different perspectives and challenges associated with rural migration dynamics.  

This first meeting of experts was held at FAO headquarters and brought together experts from international institutions, development cooperation agencies, research centers, policy practitioners and civil society organizations.

  

Women, Food and Rural Development: A Mediterranean Opportunity! 

5- 6 June 2018, Brussels

The CIHEAM promotes Mediterranean Women at the European Development Days 2018 (EDD18) organized by the European Commission . The CIHEAM presented its activities on women empowerment and contributed to raise awareness on the major role of women in issues related to food, rural and agriculture.

The ERANETMED legacy for Euro-Mediterranean Joint programming  

5-7 March 2018, Movenpick Aqaba (Jordan)

The overall aim of the event was to discuss and confirm the pivotal role of ERANETMED in Euro-Mediterranean joint programming for research and innovation. ERANETMED, funded by the European Commission under the 7thframework programme, has started in 2013 and has been coordinated by CIHEAM Bari.

Renewed edition of "NEW MEDIT"

15 May 2018, Bari

The renewed edition of the "New Medit" was presented at the Bari Institute on 15 May 2018. This open access quarterly review has now a new website: http://newmedit.iamb.it/, a redesigned editorial and layout, It is edited by the Bononia University Press, NEW Editorial Board and Advisory Board composed by experienced researchers in the field of Mediterranean issues and by representatives of international Bodies and Organizations linked to the Mediterranean area, and…the same aim, attuned to CIHEAM's mission, to provide through this journal a forum for Mediterranean scientists in order to discuss topics and themes linked to the activities carried out by our Institute.

FARMCIRCLE: Young Farmers, Circles of Circular Economy

 22-25 May 2018, Chania

The first trial training seminar on "Circular Economy: On farm opportunities and good practices", was held at the premises of the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (CIHEAM-MAICh) on the 22, 23 and 24 of May 2018. The seminar was organised within the framework of the project "Young Farmers: Circles of Circular Economy", coordinated by the Energy Institute Hrvoje Požar (EIHP, Croatia) and financed by the Danube Strategic Project Fund (DSPF). MAICh is participating in this project as a partner, while the other organisations involved include the Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry (Styria, Austria) and the Society of Sustainable Development Design (Croatia).

The XI International Symposium on the Plant Hormone Ethylene

ETHYLENE 2018 meetings are an international affiliation of researchers working on all aspects of ETHYLENE, including investigations spanning from biosynthetic/sensing/transductive/responsive mechanisms to assessing the biological activities of this hormone. This affiliation hosts meetings every 3-4 years. Meetings have already been held in Europe, USA, New Zealand and China for the past two decades. The 2018 meeting took place at the CIHEAM Chania on 2 June 2018. It was organised by Prof Angelos Kanellis, Prof. Mondher Bouzayen and Dr. Panagiotis Kalaitzis in collaboration with the Scientific Organising committee.

SmartAL Project: International Conference on Agriculture and Life Science 

7-9 May 2018, Tirana

Magali Maire, coordinator of the SmartAL Project at the CIHEAM-Montpellier participated in the International Conference on Agriculture and Life Science held in Tirana, Albania from 7 to 9 May 2018. She presented the SmartAl project under this following approach "the Optimisation of youth employment in Albania through the creation of a MASTER in European innovations for a sustainable management of Albanian territories, rural areas and agriculture."

MADRE Project 

1 June 2018, Marseille

Partners and stakeholders have met in Marseille on 1 June for the final event of MADRE project. This meeting was an opportunity to present the outcomes and results of 18 months of work, in order to implement solutions to foster urban and peri-urban agriculture at Mediterranean level and to address challenges and issues preventing such practice to become commonplace.

MedAID First Annual Meeting

3-4 May 2018, Brest

The First MedAID Annual Meeting was held on 3 and 4 May 2018 and hosted by the European Institute for Marine Studies (IUEM) at the Université de Bretagne Occidentale (UBO), Plouzané, Brest.

MedAID (Mediterranean Aquaculture Integrated Development) is a four-year project, funded by the European Union in the framework of Horizon 2020. The goal of MedAID is to increase the overall competitiveness and sustainability of the Mediterranean marine fish-farming sector, across the whole value chain.

XXII International Master in Plant Breeding: Looking for plant breeding specialists 

The XXII International Master in Plant Breeding is one of the oldest international Plant Breeding Masters in Europe and is designed to train professionals in the field of plant breeding, enabling them to develop new varieties that are adapted to different environmental conditions, making a better use of inputs and integrated in environmentally and economically viable agricultural systems. The Masters integrates the tools of molecular biology, cell biology, genomics, biotechnology and bioinformatics in order to improve classical breeding programmes.

International Course on Xylella fastidiosa

12-16 November 2018, Zaragoza

From 12-16 November 2018, CIHEAM Zaragoza will be organising an advanced course for professionals on "Plant diseases caused by Xylella fastidiosa: detection, identification, monitoring and control". The course will involve 14 European and international expert lecturers and is being sponsored by the Spanish Agriculture Ministry and supported by several EU projects – XF-Actors, POnTE and MSCA-RISE CURE XF.
