Meeting with the Jordanian Minister of Agriculture and Environment

On the side-lines of the 11th meeting of the Mediterranean Organic Agriculture Network (MOAN) held in Amman from 17 to 20 September 2019,  the CIHEAM Bari Director, Maurizio Raeli and the CIHEAM Secretary General, Plácido Plaza, met with the Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Environment of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Mr Ibrahim Al-Shahahdeh. Jordan and the CIHEAM have been developing joint activities for several years, particularly in the fields of research and training.

The Secretary General of the CIHEAM, the Director of the CIHEAM Montpellier, the Vice-President of INRA in charge of international policy and the INRA-CIRAD Delegate for International Relations and Director of the Joint Support Research Unit for International Relations exchanged on future avenues of collaboration particularly in the fields of in research and innovation in Mediterranean agri-food systems

Working together to tackle challenges of youth empowerment, resilience and development of Mediterranean territories

A working meeting was held at the Headquarters of the CIHEAM in Paris with the CMI to prepare new joint actions, particularly in terms of capacity building, empowerment, and employment for young Mediterranean people, with a focus on resilience issues of territories faced with climate change.

Developing synergies on bio-economy, biodiversity and land use in a climate change context
  
The Secretary General of the CIHEAM met with Marc PALAHI, Director of the European Forest Institute  (EFI) in Paris to discuss and exchange around new areas of collaboration between the two Organisations.

Both active in the areas of research and capacity building, the CIHEAM and EFI are developing synergies to contribute effectively to the development of information, policies and practices on bio-economy, biodiversity and land use in a climate change context.

During his recent interventions, the Secretary-General Plácido Plaza recalled the importance of Mediterranean youth and the role they can play in meeting the challenges of food security, adaptation to climate change and rural migration.

He also highlighted the strategic investment to be made in human capital, especially in the most fragile areas.

International Conference on "Tunisian phytogenetic resources better conserved for future generations"

2-3 October 2019, Gammarth-Tunis, Tunisia

The National Bank of Genes (BNG) along with the CIHEAM Bari organised an international conference entitled "Tunisian phytogenetic resources better conserved for future generations" from 2 to 3 October at the Hotel El Mouradi-Gammarth in Tunis, in the framework of the Tunisian-Italian Technical Cooperation programme on Environment Protection.


First annual meeting of GECO2 EU project on global warming

29-30 October 2019, Bari, Italy

The GECO2 EU project aims to start a voluntary CO2 market dedicated to Italian and Croatian farmers. Funded by the CBC Italy-Croatia Programme for 2.5 million euros, GECO2 joins the fight against climate change to develop a sustainable agricultural and industrial model.

Un'alimentazione sana per un mondo Fame Zero" sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Advanced Workshop on Weed Mapping as a Tool in Plant Ecology and Weed Management

The workshop was organised by the auspices of Agricultural University of Athens and supported by the European Weed Research Society (EWRS) in cooperation with the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague and the EWRS Weed Mapping Working Group.

 

 

Relaunching Medforval, the Network of Mediterranean forests with high ecological value

Medforval, the Network of Mediterranean forests with high ecological value, has just been relaunched. Eighteen forest sites joined forces to preserve the high ecological value of their ecosystems, that are essential for everyone's survival. Enhancing the collaboration among forest actors in the Mediterranean basin is the key for real change.

Launching an application to assess the risks of phytosanitary practices

15 October 2019, Montpellier, France

EToPhy web, the first web application to evaluate and control the impacts of phytosanitary products on the applicator's health and the environment, has been launched at the CIHEAM Montpellier in partnership with the R&D company ECOCLIMASOL. The app was recommended by the General Commissariat for Sustainable Development of the Ministry of Ecological and Solidarity Transition and by the French Agency for Biodiversity...

 


 

The CIHEAM Montpellier welcomes its new students!

The CIHEAM Montpellier staff organised an integration day for the 2019-20 students coming from different Mediterranean countries to present the Institute, its trainings and services, and visit the Campus. The 75 students enrolled in the CIHEAM Montpellier's masters (I3P, GAT, CDV and ECODEVA) have now started their studies.

 


 

 

Workshop "Thinking of rural development in Albania"

This Workshop was organised in parallel to the Steering Committee of the SmartAL project, a Capacity Building project co-funded by Erasmus+. It has been organized by the CIHEAM Montpellier, in collaboration with the European University of Tirana, the Agricultural University of Tirana and the University Fan S. Noli, Korçë.

 


 

 

DRYARC initiative co-design workshop

Eight CGIAR centres participated in a co-design workshop to consolidate the key objectives of the DryArc Initiative and define its outputs and outcomes while ensuring integration with global climate and resilience needs.

CIHEAM Zaragoza brings together more than 200 former students from 24 countries for its 50th anniversary

4 - 5 July 2019, Zaragoza, Spain

CIHEAM Zaragoza brought together more than 200 students from 24 countries for events organised in honour of this year's 50th anniversary of the founding of the Institute. In addition to Spain, participants mainly came from Latin American countries, Europe, and North Africa. The event featured Plácido Plaza, CIHEAM Secretary General; Joaquín Olona, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Environment for the government of Aragón; and Javier Sierra, Director of the CIHEAM Zaragoza Institute.


Meeting of the FAO-CIHEAM Networks on Sheep and Goats and Mediterranean Pastures

23 - 25 October 2019, Meknes, Morocco

The first Joint Meeting of FAO-CIHEAM's Networks was organised last October at the National School of Agriculture in Meknes, Morocco. The event was of particular significance as it coincided with the 50th anniversary of the CIHEAM Zaragoza. Secondly, it was the first joint meeting of the FAO-CIHEAM Network for Research and Development in Sheep and Goats (Subnetworks on Nutrition and Production Systems) and the FAO-CIHEAM Subnetwork for Research and Development of Mediterranean Pasture and Forage Resources. Thirdly, it addressed the efficiency and resilience of feed resources and small ruminant production in the light of global challenges in the Mediterranean region.


Upcoming course on statistical tools for plant phenomic data analysis

20 - 24 January 2020, Zaragoza, Spain

In January 2020, the CIHEAM Zaragoza, with the collaboration of the European Plant Phenotyping Network (EPPN2020), will host an advanced course on statistical tools for plant phenomic data analysis in Zaragoza. This course intends to provide participants with information on the different platforms, sensors and carriers used for plant phenotyping as well as the suitable experimental designs and analysis using mixed models.
