Women, Food and Rural development
A Mediterranean Opportunity!
CIHEAM promotes Mediterranean Women at the European Development Days 2018 #SheisWE
Brussels, 5 & 6 JUNE 2018
#CIHEAM4Women
The CIHEAM was present during the European Development Days (EDD), organized by the European Commission to present the Organisation's activities on women empowerment and to raise awareness on the major role of women in food, rural and agriculture issues.
It was also an opportunity to present the CAPMED 2025 (CIHEAM Action Plan for the Mediterranean) through the prism of gender issues. Participants visiting the CIHEAM's stand were invited to discover how food and nutrition security, climate change, migration or rural development impacted specifically women in the Mediterranean region and how they were part of the solution to overcome some of the most important challenges of the region (unemployment, water scarcity, land degradation etc.).

__________
Women are essential to food and nutrition security as they represent an important part of the agricultural labor force, especially in the poorest areas.
Women are significant bearers of knowledge, best practices, and innovations in the sustainable use of natural resources, including in climate change adaptation and the conservation of agrobiodiversity
Very often, women must deal with compounded difficulties, inequalities, and discriminations: unskilled jobs, less paid (if paid at all), less access to education and capacity building, less access to financial services, to the use of fertilizers, mechanical equipment or new technologies.
Whether in the struggle against the waste of natural and human resources, in the formulation of poverty alleviation policies, the support of entrepreneurship and in decision-making processes, the participation of rural women should be fostered and greater investment should be made in building their capacities and for their empowerment.
In line with the UN SDGs, the CAPMED gives prominence to issues of capacity building and empowerment of women in agriculture, fisheries and more generally in rural Mediterranean areas. It supports women by implementing programmes, by promoting social, technical and economic innovations and by encouraging gender research.
